Digby’s Name

Posted September 27th, 2008 by DBDog

After many years of missing the joys of canine companionship, Digby was the first dog to join us.  His naming came about several years before we even got him.

A co-worker was expecting and we all spent weeks supplying her with what we felt were appropriate names. Some of the names we came up with were pretty interesting. We were having fun.

Late one night while watching TV, I saw the name Digby on a gravestone of all places.  (It was one of those forensic shows.) As soon as I saw it I thought, now that’s an interesting name. I’ll have to tell Tracy.

She promptly discarded the suggested name especially after I told her where I saw it!

I however decided it would be a great name for my dog.

Origins of the name Digby

Digby is a very rare male first name and a very popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). It comes from a surname which was derived from the name of an English town. It’s a combination of Old English dic “ditch” and Old Norse byr “farm, town”. So I guess that would translate to “Town by the ditch.”

Digby, Town by the Ditch

Digby is a small village in the district of North Kesteven, in the county of Lincolnshire, England. Near to the village is the large Royal Air Force base of RAF Digby. During the Second World War the base was home to Hurricane and Spitfire squadrons. ‘Digby Corner’ is a wildlife sanctuary. In June 2007, “Digby Fen” was home to a breeding pair of Montagu’s Harriers, the rarest breeding birds of prey in the British Isles.
