National Dog Week

Posted September 22nd, 2008 by DBDog

The 4th week in September is officially National Dog Week and it has been since 1928.  This is the week to promote anything dog.

The purpose of National Dog Week is to educate all dog owners of their responsibilities to their pets and to their communities, particularly those organizations dedicated to caring for unwanted or lost dogs.

Here’s some ideas on how you can celebrate:

  • Visit your local shelter.  If it’s possible, rescue a dog and provide a forever home.  If not, scrounge up some old blankets, buy a big bag of dry dog food and donate them to the shelter.
  • Volunteering at a shelter or rescue if you have the time.  Try fostering a dog if you can.
  • Make a donation, small or large, to a dog rescue or dog shelter.
  • Make a special effort this week to spend some quality time with your dog.  Take them to a new area for a nice long leisurely walk, play with them, exchange an old ratty toy for a new one or teach them a new trick.  It’s good for you and really good for them.
  • Host a neighborhood dog party.  The dogs get to play together while the people get to swap stories about their dogs.

However you decide to celebrate the week, at least you’ll be thinking about it.  Have fun!
