News | Dog allegedly finds a foot

September 22nd had an interesting story that came out of Alabama.

You may have read the story about a family dog who allegedly returned home just before midnight carrying what appeared to be a child’s foot.  The son of a homeowner spotted the dog carrying something and called his father, who then alerted police.

“A dog could have brought it so far and then another one got it,” Police Chief Chris Hargett said. “It could be miles away.” And although the foot appears to have been off for only a few days, “We pretty much have to think the worst.”

Authorities spend two days searching the town of Russellville after two local doctors concluded that the foot, which is between 6 and 8 inches long and had five partial toes, was that of a human, likely a child.

Turns out that the foot was that of a bear and not a child at all.  “They said the black bear has a paw that is the closest thing to a human’s foot,” Police Chief Chris Hargett said. “That’s why everyone was having such a problem making an exact determination.”

Hargett said he’s relieved that tests show no child was harmed. But he’s also baffled because there haven’t been any bear sightings around the northwest Alabama town.

Case closed.

Bet the family that owned the dog passes this story along for generations.

I’m still wondering about the bear. I like to think he’s okay since there was no mention of finding a bear missing a foot.
