Obama’s Dog & Barney Bites Reporter

When I first heard that Barack Obama’s children, Malia and Sasha, wanted to adopt a dog, I thought that was great. I think everyone should experience the joy that dogs can bring to our lives especially for kids.  I’ve been following this story in the news because I was interested in how the family will decide and which kind of dog they would adopt.

So what kind of dog should they get?  The whole country is offering opinions and many people are offering them dogs. I’d think it would be tough to decide with all that help.  I bet every animal advocacy group has sent a message offering to help find the perfect hypoallergenic presidential pooch.

I think all this attention to shelter dogs is a good thing.  What could be better than a national dialog about a dog just because a Dad promised his kids and that Dad became President.  Even if they can’t find the perfect pooch at a shelter to adopt, I’m happy that the country was able to discuss it.  Anything that brings so much attention to the shelters is a very good thing in my opinion.

It was interesting to find out that 10 year old Malia Obama has allergies. Apparently 10% of Americans are allergic to dogs.  (I’m glad I’m not in that 10%.) They get symptoms that can range between itchy eyes to more serious breathing problems.  It’s important to remember that we humans aren’t allergic to their hair or fur.  It’s the proteins in the dander and saliva that cause the problem.

I have to laugh though, because I’m a Barney fan.  Barney is President Bush’s Scottish Terrier.  Did you see the video where he recently bit a reporter? Don’t feel bad for the reporter.  He had a White House doctor take care of him and he even seemed okay about Barney biting him.  Barney was obviously not in the mood.

I can’t wait to find out who the lucky dog is.
