I was interested in how many and what kinds of dogs have had the pleasure of living at the White House. It’s pretty interesting. I enjoyed looking at the names of these dogs.
Seems some of our Presidents had a good sense of humor!
There’s Drunkard, Taster, Tipler and Tipsy - George Washington’s Black and Tan Coonhounds, Boston Beans - Calvin Coolidge’s Bulldog, President - Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Great Dane, Grits - Jimmy Carter’s dog, Fido- Abraham Lincoln’s dog, and Feller - Harry S. Truman’s Cocker Spaniel.
Herbert Hoover, our 31st President of the United States, is listed as having 9 Dogs!
Seems there was also a run early on in the country where some of our presidents had no dogs. The 4th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 17th, 21st, and 25th Presidents of the United States had no dogs at all. That’s 11 Presidents out of 43 past Presidents with no dogs. William McKinley was the last president without a dog and he left office in 1901. George started us out right with his 7 dogs.
I know when I was trying to decide which candidate to pick, I checked to see if any had dogs. Good thing Barack Obama has kids that want a dog! Don’t break the streak Obama…
