We recently became aware of a cat in need of a forever home. He was living with a nice family who loved him and cared for him. Unfortunately for the family and the cat, allergies flared up and the cat needed a new home. We are very happy to welcome Flash (the cat) into our home.
We got Flash on a Sunday afternoon. We brought him home and let him wander about at his leisure while Digby and Benny were outside unaware that we added a new member to our household. We had a plan for introducing the dogs to the cat. We wanted to make sure the cat would be okay and not too scared when they first met.
We knew Flash has lived with “calm dogs” in the past. I’m not sure what calm dogs are exactly but I think a dog is a dog to a cat. Flash should be okay. Flash is a 3 year old cool casual laid back kind of cat. We think he’ll be fine.
Digby is a Wheaten Terrier who loves everyone. We decided to introduce him first. He needs to say hello and isn’t happy until he does. That little tail of his was going nonstop. He wanted to get closer but Flash wasn’t sure what to make of Digby. Digby’s barking and talking didn’t help pave the way either. There was a hiss and a swipe once too which sure made Digby back up.
Next up was Benny. Surely Benny would be the problem dog since he doesn’t like anyone new. Benny was actually okay. Probably because Flash is almost as big as Benny.
All in all the first hours of introduction went well for everyone. Flash spent the night safe from the dogs in the basement of our house. He was very attentive to all the new sounds in the house. Like most cats, he was curious and explored before settling down on the carpet in view of the stairs.
He ate some and found the litter box without any problems. I think he had a good nights sleep even.
More on Flash as we move forward.
